Beautiful July
by Brenda Hoss

Latest Update: July 25, 2011

One of my favorites: Carolina Lily (Lilium michauxii)
I anxiously await July so I can search for Turks-Cap Lily (Lilium superbum) and Carolina Lily (Lilium michauxii). The Carolina lily honors Andre' Michaux (1746-1802), a French botanist who explored extensively in North America. Turks-Cap lily is the tallest of the native Lilium species in our area, reaching as much as 8 ft. with 3-25 flowers per stalk, thus "superbum" or "superb". Enjoy!

Downy Rattlesnake Plantain (Goodyera pubescens)

Flowers of Carolina Lily are sometimes more orange than Turk's-Cap Lily.

Carolina Lily: No green star in center. Very fragrant.
